Flight makes emergency landing shortly after taking off from CLT due to ‘possible mechanical issue’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A flight had to make an emergency landing shortly after taking off from Charlotte Douglas International Airport Sunday afternoon, officials with American Airlines said.

The airlines said they flight bound for Portland, Maine, had a possible mechanical issue.

Airport officials said the plane made a safe landing, and no one was hurt.

The airline said the plane is out of service and being evaluated by a maintenance team.

Statement from American Airlines:

“American Airlines flight 771, with service from Charlotte (CLT) to Portland, Maine (PWM) encountered a possible mechanical issue shortly after departure. The aircraft returned to CLT where it landed safely and taxied to the gate on its own power. The flight is scheduled to re-depart for PWM on a different aircraft shortly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

No other details have been released at this time.
