CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police told Channel 9 that two twin toddlers and their mother were among five people recovering in the hospital following a hit-and-run in northeast Charlotte Sunday night.

The collision happened around 8 p.m. on Dinglewood Avenue, near East Sugar Creek Road and The Plaza.

According to the police report, five of the six struck by the car were injured and taken to Carolinas Medical Center.

Police are still searching for the driver and according to the traffic report, officers think it was a silver minivan or SUV with tinted windows driven by an African-American woman.

Investigators said two 2-year-olds and their mother were hit while walking along the side of the road.

The three others that were hurt were sitting inside of a parked car and standing outside the car at the time.

One of the victims, who had already returned home from the hospital, thinks the car sped down the street and then turned towards the group on purpose.

Police have not confirmed if that was true.

The man, who asked not to be identified, has a chipped bone in his lower leg. It is severely swollen and he has to use crutches to get around.

He told Channel 9 that he was standing with a group of people around a car when he turned to see the vehicle plowing into them.

“A car came out of nowhere, hit us -- the babies was way across the street after they got hit,” he said.

Channel 9 also spoke with a neighbor who said she heard the crash and immediately ran to help.

“I heard people screaming and came to that little girl and the young mothers’ rescue right there because she had two young children with her,” the neighbor said.

Police told Channel 9 that one of the 2-year-olds that was hit by the car has serious injuries.
