CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Drivers are having to navigate a new traffic pattern at a busy west Charlotte intersection starting Friday morning.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is hoping the so-called continuous flow intersection will ease traffic on Brookshire Boulevard and Mount Holly-Huntersville Road.

It's the state's first continuous flow intersection, but some drivers had some confusion about the new pattern.

"It sort of backs up and stops the intersection and then the other traffic comes, and everything just stops until the light changes, so I thought that was a little odd," said driver Sharmaine Gray.

NCDOT said it expected hiccups on the first day, but said they plan to continue to send crews out there to make sure the configuration works properly.
