CHARLOTTE — Don’t expect to see vertical construction on the Brooklyn Village project in Uptown Charlotte until the summer of 2026.
Mecklenburg County commissioners will be able to question the developer of the Brooklyn Village project on Wednesday night.
The first phase of the project consists of construction work on the former Bob Walton Plaza land. The first two parcels call for more than 500 apartments- 55 of them affordable -plus 22,000 square feet of retail and over 600 parking spaces. It won’t be until 2026 until vertical construction starts.
That’s the only firm timeline for the two north parcels of land where the Bob Walton Plaza used to be. The rest of the plot of land calls for a hotel, more apartments and office space. There’s no word when that will be built. And there’s also no timeline for when construction will start on the Marshall Park plot of land.
It’s a long drawn-out timeline for a project the county greenlit in 2016
“I’ll be dead and gone when any of this stuff comes to fruition at best,” Commissioner Arthur Griffin said.
The developer, BK Partners, says economic conditions have made it difficult to start building. County staff told Bruno earlier this year that the developer has until 2028 to finish the first phase.
Commissioner Griffin is skeptical.
“There are a lot of cranes moving in the air around downtown Charlotte and South End, etc.,” he said. “What are the financial conditions that allow those cranes to be operating, as opposed to no cranes operating in the Brooklyn Village area?”
Commissioner Mark Jerrell says he plans to question the developer over the prolonged timeline. Despite the delays, he says the project still has great value.
“I think paying homage to the historical legacy of those residents that occupy that section of our community called Brooklyn is really important on a lot of different levels,” he said.
Once the first phase is completed, the next phases include the demolition of the former Board of Education building and Marshall Park, according to Mecklenburg County.
