The Ervin Building — also known as the Varnadore Building — at 4037 E. Independence Blvd. has been a landmark in the Queen City since it first opened its doors in 1965. But for nearly a decade the building sat vacant, until that real estate investment company — Gvest Capital — stepped in with a vision.
Currently based in Pineville, Gvest Capital purchased the property for $750,000 in 2018, according to Mecklenburg County real estate records. It then rezoned the site in 2019, with plans to turn the 1962-era property into an office building with a rooftop bar and restaurant.

“At the end of the day, I grew up in Charlotte, my family is from here and we saw (the Ervin Building) over the years,” Gvest Capital Vice President Richard Gee said. “It would be a shame to just have it torn down. I think everyone feels that way…To see this come down would have been just a travesty to the history of Charlotte.”
Gee announced during the groundbreaking ceremony his plans for Gvest Capital to move its headquarters to the Ervin Building.
