ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — The fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire that killed a man late Wednesday night at a home in Spencer.

Fire crews were dispatched to the home on Long Ferry Road off Salisbury Avenue around 10:30 p.m. When they arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the house.

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof of the home to help ventilate and were able to rescue the man from the second floor and perform CPR, but he did not survive.

His name has not been released.

Firefighters told Channel 9 that a family downstairs was able to get out safely.

Two dogs also died in the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but officials believe it started upstairs.

The American Red Cross is helping the family.
