Firefighters spend 24 hours burning off propane after tanker truck crash

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — It took about 24 hours to burn off 700 gallons of propane after a tanker truck crashed Tuesday in Iredell County, officials said.

Union Grove Fire and Rescue responded to Trumpet Branch Road near Eupeptic Springs Road.

Nearby residents had to be evacuated.

“They did a great job getting it under control and keeping everyone safe in the area,” resident Heather Chenevey said.

Officials said firefighters were on the scene at about 10 a.m. and that it would take all night and into Wednesday morning to burn off the propane on the truck.

“The neighbors across the road have no power and they are staying in a hotel room for the night,” Chenevey said.

They said Trumpet Branch Road was shut down between Jennings and Eupeptic Springs roads and drivers should avoid the area.

The road reopened late Wednesday morning.

“Happy new year,” Chenevey said. “Unfortunately, if won’t be at home, but at least (residents are) safe.”
