CHARLOTTE — Firefighters responded to a large scrapyard fire Monday afternoon along Donald Ross Road, near the Walmart on Wilkinson Boulevard in west Charlotte, fire officials said.
Donald Ross Road was closed between Wilkinson and West boulevards at about 4 p.m. as crews worked to douse the fire.
Chopper 9 was over the scene of Southern Metal Co., a metal recycling business.
Dozens of first responders were at the fire as a ladder truck showered water on a stack of junked cars.
Smoke was blowing around at ground level and plumes could be seen for miles.
“Anytime you have smoke conditions it is hazardous,” said Capt. Jackie Gilmore, Charlotte Fire Department. “But again, due to the wind conditions and the shifting of the wind. We did have some concerns.”
There were no environmental concerns, according to Charlotte Fire.
It took more than three dozen firefighters about two hours to get the fire under control.
Firefighters believe a spark from moving metal could have started it.
No injuries were reported.
No further information has been released.
