Fire starts at second building near 5-alarm fire in SouthPark

CHARLOTTE — While firefighters with the Charlotte Fire Department were battling a massive fire at an apartment complex in SouthPark, Chopper 9 Skyzoom spotted flames coming from the roof of another building nearby.

Just after 11 a.m. Thursday, first responders called for crews at a building on Park South Drive just south of Royal Crest Drive.

The building is just a few blocks away from the scene of another fire that broke out Thursday morning.

The Charlotte Fire Department confirmed later Thursday that embers from the five-alarm fire in SouthPark created new hotspots in the area. Channel 9 crews also saw large flames shooting embers into the air.

Family said 30-year-old construction worker Demonte Sherrill, 30, died in the blaze.

Another worker was unaccounted for Thursday night.

No injuries have been reported from the secondary fire.
