Channel 9 could see flames shooting from the roof when they arrived on the scene just after 9 p.m.

The family was able to escape after spotting the fire on their back deck.

It took about 40 firefighters from four different departments to get the fire under control. No injuries were reported.

The first firefighter to arrive lived just two minutes away.

“The quicker we get here, the more chance we have to save or assist personnel, so tonight that was a big plus,” Steele Creek Fire Chief Chris Hardin said.

Fire officials said there are no fire hydrants on the street, so they had to call the Charlotte Fire Department to bring in their fire boat. They used it to haul water from Lake Wylie to help battle the fire.

The home is a total loss.

The cause is under investigation and officials do not believe it was suspicious.
