CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Fire crews rescued a dog Wednesday afternoon that was stuck in a rock quarry in Charlotte for days, officials said.

Charlotte Fire said they got a call Monday about a dog on a ledge, 170 feet down in a quarry near Old Nations Ford Road.

Chopper 9 flew over the area Wednesday morning and could see the large dog pacing on a ledge in the quarry.

Charlotte Fire said due to the depth of the quarry and soil type, it did not have the resources to rescue a dog. The company that owns the quarry then brought in a crane, and three firefighters were lowered down to rescue the dog.

Officials said the conditions were dangerous, and when they were being lowered down, a tree branch snapped and scared the dog.

“The dog was pretty happy to see us at first, but a tree branch broke, scared him and that involved a little hike. We were able to coax him with food. He wanted to be carried back so that created a little bit of a problem,” said EJ McCormick with Charlotte Fire.

Firefighters had to use fire station cooking to coax the dog. They finally were able to track him down and bring him up to safety. The dog did spit the food out though.

“We cooked some burgers for lunch and we thought that would be the best thing to give them, but he didn’t want any part of that,” said Justin Ranson, with Charlotte Fire. “I had a hand in making those, so I’ll take the blame for that.”

The dog, Zeus, has since been reunited with his owner and was being checked out at an animal hospital.
