FDA to launch plan to prevent children from using e-cigarettes

The FDA said it will roll out new measures to stop children using e-cigarettes.

Commissioner Scott Gottlieb called the trend "an epidemic."

He said he's met with e-cigarette makers in recent weeks, working an action plan to reverse the trend.

Anti-smoking groups want the government to crack down on ads for e-cigarette flavors that appeal to kids.

"The FDA has finally recognized that the lack of regulation has led to the wild, wild west," Matthew Myers from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids said.

The FDA said their action plan should be ready sometime next month.

Earlier this week, Channel 9's Dave Faherty investigated the explosive dangers of e-cigarettes.

A Catawba County man lost some of his teeth when an e-cigarette exploded while he was using it.

The U.S. Fire Administration reports nearly 200 cases of e-cigarette explosions and fires between 2009 and 2016.
