CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The family of a teen killed in a tragic car crash in south Charlotte opened up about their loved one for the first time since the accident.
Alexander Mundt, 16, was killed when police said his friend lost control of the vehicle he was riding in and struck a tree on Colony Road early Sunday morning.
Mundt was from Santa Fe, New Mexico. He had traveled to Charlotte to visit the teen police have charged in his death.
The Mundt family didn’t want to talk about the crash and spoke only good things of the driver and the relationship the two families have, during a phone interview Thursday.
“This has been really rough on both families, and both families have a long time connection,” said Michael Mundt, Alex’s father.
That long-term friendship began about nine years ago at a camp in New Mexico. One of the many activities Michael Mundt said his son participated in.
“He touched so many lives,” said Michael. “Not just here. There are all those connections he made because of his activities.
Alex lived with his family in Santa Fe, where he shined not only as an athlete competing on the high school’s baseball team but academically as well.
The 16-year-old was already taking college courses and, according to his father, was hoping to maybe one day have a career in engineering or technology.
“He was a wonderful, wonderful kid,” said Michael.
An admirable boy with a big heart for his family.
Alex was one of seven children and was adopted from Russia just one year after he was born.
The family told Channel 9 they’re touched by the outpouring of affection and support from family and friends.
“Everybody remembered him for his smile,” said Alex's father. “He was a happy kid. He was happy that weekend when he was there.”
The Mundts said Alex was also active in his church. Funeral services will be held in Santa Fe Tuesday.
