Speeding led to deadly crash in Steele Creek, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — A man was killed in a crash in Steele Creek on Thursday morning, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.

It happened just after 10 a.m. on East Westinghouse Boulevard at the intersection with Rodney Street.

Officers found a 1997 Isuzu landscape truck with left-rear damage, a 2007 Infinity G35 with heavy damage to its front, and a 2018 Ford Transit Connect with heavy front-end damage.

The driver of the Infinity, 23-year-old Maurice Leach, died after being taken to the hospital, investigators said. The driver of the Ford was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

East Westinghouse Boulevard was closed in both directions while police investigated.

Authorities believe the driver of the Isuzu made a left turn from Rodney Street onto East Westinghouse Boulevard when Leach was driving west on Westinghouse Boulevard. Investigators said Leach didn’t slow down, hitting the back left of the Isuzu. That caused the Infinity to cross into oncoming traffic and hit the Ford head on.

Police said Leach was believed to have been speeding, leading to the crash. It’s not known if he was impaired, police said, but he was not wearing a seatbelt.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Det. Kupfer at 704-432-2169, extension 1. You can also leave information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or by clicking here.
