MEDIC said one person was killed in the crash but that nobody else was hurt.
Troopers identified the man who died as Dillan John Hinkle, of Hiddenite. Investigators said traffic in the area had slowed down and stopped due to construction and the vehicle Hinkle was driving crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer.
Hinkle died at the scene.
Both the general-purpose lanes as well as the express lanes were blocked but by 7:30 a.m., all lanes were reopened.
Officials had to reroute traffic onto Sunset Road while the interstate was closed.
