Family denied boarding, told they were on no-go list during layover at Charlotte airport

CHARLOTTE — A family of six traveling through Charlotte Douglas International Airport got a nasty surprise this weekend when a gate agent kicked them off a flight and then told them they were banned from flying on American Airlines.

The Meyer family told Channel 9 it took them 36 hours to get back to Denver from the Virgin Islands, but they’re traumatized after the experience during a layover in Charlotte.

A recording shows a gate agent with American Airlines in Charlotte telling the family they wouldn’t be able to fly with the carrier.

“You are not going to be able to fly on American, so you will have to go out through security,” the gate agent said.

The Meyers were among the many who experienced delayed flights and canceled flights this past weekend. The family of six had to book a series of connecting flights to get home because they were about to be out of their daughter’s epilepsy medication.

One of those layovers brought the Meyers to Charlotte. A gate agent said two of their carry-on bags were too big and they needed to be checked -- after a quick swap to make sure she had her daughter’s medication, Laney Meyer was called back to the gate to swipe her boarding pass. After doing that, she said her daughter was on the jetway and cried about being on four flights. That’s when the gate agent came down the jetway and kicked them off the flight.

“She said you are off my plane right now, I said I didn’t say anything, my daughter said I just said something to my mom. She said, then you’re all off ... you are kicked off my plane, get out of here get off the jetway you are off the plane,” Laney recounted to Channel 9.

Meyer says they were told they were on a “no-go” list and wouldn’t be able to fly home. An American Airlines representative at the airport ended up contacting the family and apologized; the family then got re-booked on later flights.

Meyer says she thinks the hundreds of delays this past weekend may have been a factor in how they were treated by the gate agent.
