CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It was a crime that shocked an exclusive Steele Creek Community -- David Doyle was found tied up, beaten and stabbed in July inside his home on Plantation Woods Drive.

PAST COVERAGE:

Channel 9 has uncovered new details about what may have led to his death.

Doyle's step brother, Brian Tyrrell, spoke to Channel 9 by phone.

“He was not an extremist, he did not trust the government,” Tyrrell said.

Tyrrell and Doyle owned a car dealership in Wyoming and Tyrrell said after the 9/11 tragedy he noticed a change in Doyle.

“He was obviously worried about the direction the country was going, he was fearful that our currency wasn't going to be worth anything,” he said.

Tyrrell said that fear prompted Doyle to collect gold, silver and guns. According to his neighbors, Doyle told plenty of people about his possessions.

“I don't know what spurred him on to do that, but obviously he did," Tyrrell said.

Three men were arrested in Doyle's murder. Neighbors believe Peter Gould did yard work for Doyle. Daniel Blakeney and Tardra Bouknight are also charged in the crime.

Doyle's family believes prosecutors should seek the death penalty in this case.

“Absolutely, I think the death penalty is a must. The punishment needs to fit the crime,” Tyrrell said.
