Mendoza said she was in a child safety seat but died from her injuries. Three other people were also injured in the crash but they are all recovering.
“It was terrible. When I got the call it was like are you kidding me? Are you kidding me?” Mendoza told Channel 9.
Mendoza said Gutierez and her mother had just moved to North Carolina from Honduras five months ago for one main reason.
“She wanted a better life for herself and for the baby,” Mendoza explained.
Now, Gutierez’s mother and other family members are trying to figure out how they will pay for the funeral.
Family members said they are paying they’ll get the help they need, as well as the answers they are desperately looking for.
“Trying to understand god, why? When you see the baby, you dream that you’re gonna see her married and graduate from school. I mean living in a wonderful country, living a different life,” Mendoza said.
