Family of 8, dog, and guinea pig escape early morning fire in University City

CHARLOTTE — A family of eight, their dog, and guinea pig made it out safely after a fire broke out in a home in University City, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. on Russell Street, near Interstate 85 and North Tryon.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Red Cross is helping the family and giving them a place to stay.
