YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Interstate 77 was blocked Tuesday afternoon after an overhead traffic sign was knocked down onto the highway, according to the South Carolina highway patrol.

A trooper tweeted around 1 p.m. that I-77 South, between the North Carolina state line and Carowinds Boulevard, was blocked by a crash and “down overhead traffic signs.”

Traffic was backed up for miles while I-77 South was shut down. After an afternoon of heavy delays, the highway reopened at 4:20 p.m.

A spokesperson for the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed an 18-wheeler hit the sign around noon, causing it to fall. Though the massive sign fell onto a 2006 Honda SUV, the spokesperson said no one was hurt.

Highway patrol said the driver of the 18-wheeler is charged with driving too fast for the conditions.

Tameka Green told Channel 9′s Dan Matics, she was traveling on a Greyhound bus trying to get to her grandma’s house in Columbia. She said her bus was forced to turn around, postponing the trip until Wednesday.

“We can’t go nowhere,” Green said.

Channel 9 has reached out to the South Carolina Department of Transportation and asked for inspection reports for the sign.
