Exclusive: Behind the scenes of site where massive coal ash cleanup is taking place

MOUNT HOLLY — For more than 80 years, the Duke Energy Riverbend Steam Station in Mount Holly produced more than 5.4 million tons of coal ash, which was stored next to Mountain Island Lake.

The coal ash in a vacant field is gone now after massive clean-up efforts throughout the site, which started years ago.

The same thing will soon happen to stations in Belmont and Sherrils Ford, officials said.
