CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Some residents in Catawba County are being asked to evacuate to higher ground because of high water levels due to heavy rainfall.
The evacuations were not mandatory.
The affected areas include:
- Along the Catawba River
- Lookout Shoals Lake
- Carpenter Cove area

Duke Energy officials notified the Oxford Department (Catfish District) that they anticipate water levels to rise up to 104.5 feet by midnight Friday.

When water levels reach 104 feet, Duke Energy will be cutting off power to the affected area.
Officials said the water is expected to rise another foot or two.
Officials urge residents to gather necessary medications and important documents to take.
There is an areal flood warning for the county until 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
