CONCORD, N.C. — Emergency crews rescued a cow that had become stranded in a frozen pond off Blackwelder Road south of Concord Monday afternoon.
Pictures from Chopper 9 Skyzoom showed rescuers using a rubber boat on the marsh water and getting a line around the cow in order to pull the 1,100-pound animal out.
They then used a chainsaw and sledgehammer to break up the ice around the cow.
The rescue began just after 3 p.m. and nearly two hours later, crews were able to clear a path and use an electric winch to pull the cow out of the water.
Crews admitted they were nervous not knowing how the cow would react or whether the ice would collapse.
After a few minutes lying on its side, the animal was able to stand up and walk around.
The cow, named "Julie," appeared to be OK but a vet was checking her out to be sure.
