CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ardrey Kell Road was closed between Providence and Tom Short Roads for hours on Tuesday night.
Police confirmed that the young driver who was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center after the crash died, and sadly they said it appears that she was the driver who caused the horrific crash in south Charlotte that shut down a major road for hours.
As the sun fell over south Charlotte, police were still trying to piece together the sequence of events in a violent head-on collision that left three vehicles in pieces, closed a section of busy Ardrey Kell Road and left neighbor Eric Boonshaft wondering what happened so close to his home.
"You see a car in a ditch, a car in the middle of the road and just wonder what people were doing," said Boonshaft.
Actually three vehicles were involved.
Police said a 20-year-old woman driving this Mercedes SUV crossed the center line on Ardrey Kell, sideswiped a pickup truck and then slammed head on into an SUV that was trailing behind.
The young woman died.
With Ardrey Kell shut down for hours between Tom Short and Providence Roads, Jodi Karaginas could only think about what she calls constant close calls here.
"The cars, they fly and they go really fast – a lot of them and they come close to the yellow line, and it just gets a little scary," said Karaginas.
As crews cleared away the vehicles three hours after the crash, police still were not sharing details of how the crash happened.
Neighbor Phil Morton though was sharing his hope for those behind the wheel.
"Thoughts and prayers go out to those who were injured," he said.
Police identified the driver who died as 20-year-old Brittany Osorio. The other two drivers suffered only minor injuries.
