Natural gas fire in SouthPark caused by construction crew, firefighters say

CHARLOTTE — It took more than 30 firefighters three hours to get a natural gas line fire under control Tuesday evening in Charlotte’s SouthPark area.

Emergency crews responded to the natural gas fire around 5 p.m. along Sharon Commons Lane, off Sharon Road.

Channel 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene and large flames could be seen shooting from the line that had been ruptured.

According to the fire department, a construction crew hit the gas line while digging.

Firefighters protected exposures while Piedmont Natural Gas workers secured the gas line. Some nearby homes were evacuated but no injuries were reported.

MEDIC’s mass casualty unit and an ambulance were brought to the scene due to heat exhaustion risks.

The portion of Sharon Road at Sharon Commons Lane between Park and Quail Hollow roads were shut down.

At about 7:30 p.m., Piedmont Natural Gas secured the line.
