CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Just days after a violent, videotaped fight between teenagers, the father seen yelling and encouraging his daughter to hit another girl talked to Channel 9.
"I should not have done that, and I'm truly sorry," said Reggie Day.
He was emotional as he talked about his daughter, Maicy, and how she has been bullied for months. He said he reported it to the principal and school resource officer at South Caldwell high school, but the bullying and threats have only gotten worse.
Eyewitness News anchor Liz Foster left a message with the principal of South Caldwell High School find out if there were any reports of bullying with the girls involved in that fight and, if so, when they were reported. She hasn't heard back.
"Nobody knows what it's like to live through months and months of seeing your daughter get tortured and bullied by these kids, and everybody has a breaking point. You say things you don't mean without you even thinking," Day said.
Maicy sent Channel 9 screenshots of some of messages before the fight that read "just meet us Bre is ready to go" and "Everyone already knows. We told you time and place."
Foster went to Bre's house, whose full name is Beverly. Family members said they wouldn't talk until they have an attorney.
Maicy said she refused to meet Bre and others in a park, so they came to her neighborhood. They met at a small chapel parking lot, just two houses down from Maicy's.
"I didn't think we'd actually fight. I thought we'd just talk, and it'd be over with," Maicy said.
The Caldwell County sheriff's office has charged eight people, including everyone in the video, with simple affray, which means fighting in public, and aiding and abetting. Maicy and her father are charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
All charges connected to the fight are misdemeanors. Foster talked to the county's district attorney, who said once the sheriff's office turns over the evidence and investigation to him, he'll decide whether to up the charges to felonies or leave them misdemeanors.
Channel 9 received disturbing video Saturday of a fight between teenage girls which is now under investigation in Caldwell County.
Arrest warrants identified 17-year-old Macy Day as the girl on top of the victim in the video.
You can see her punching the victim while others stand around.
Authorities said Day's parents, Reggie and Brandy, were encouraging their daughter to fight.
The Caldwell County Sheriff's office told Channel 9 that Reggie Day, the father, is related to the Hudson police chief.
Authorities said the fight happened on Barry Creek Circle on Thursday.
Officials said eight people have been charged and the sheriff's office said they launched an investigation as soon as they saw the video.
"I do think the parents need to stand up and be an example and not egg this kind of activity on," Lt. Barlowe said.
Authorities said everyone in the fight knew each other. The sheriff's office said some of those involved have already been arrested. There are warrants out for the others.
