BOONE, N.C. — Investigators released early findings into what caused a small plane crash in Boone that killed a retired trooper.

Preliminary reports indicate the plane sped toward the runway at the Boone airport but did not touch down, the National Transportation Safety Board told Channel 9 partners at The Watauga Democrat.

The plane tried to regain altitude and crashed into trees between the airport and the Boone Golf Club.
