Duke Energy, Siemens snag world record for ‘most powerful’ gas plant tech

CHARLOTTE — Two giants of the energy industry have earned a nod from Guinness World Records after their joint project in the greater Charlotte area resulted in the world’s “most powerful simple cycle gas power plant,” according to a press release.

Duke Energy and Siemens Energy achieved that title with the first-of-its-kind technology installed at the Lincoln Combustion Turbine Station near Denver.

The companies teamed up on the project in 2017, inking a contract to install a new-generation turbine from Siemens at Duke’s existing power plant in Lincoln County. The unusual cooperative agreement had Duke participating in some early development stages while Siemens continues upgrading and testing the turbine. It was fired up in the spring of 2020 and, by last summer, the plant had already exceeded its target of generating 402 megawatts in 2024.

Guinness certified the title based on a recorded output of 410.9 megawatts, the release states.
