Duke Energy laid off ‘a few hundred employees’ in move to cut costs for 2023

CHARLOTTE — The $300 million in operations and maintenance cost savings for 2023 that Duke Energy Corp. cited on its earnings call this week includes layoffs of “a few hundred employees,” mostly in Charlotte.

Duke spokeswoman Jennifer Garber says that the workforce reductions focused on corporate and operation support functions across the company. Most of the layoffs have already been completed, she says, as the cost-reduction plans were developed in the second half of 2022.

Some small number of layoffs remain to be completed.

Duke noted in its earnings release that its adjusted earnings excluded several one-time costs including “workplace and and workforce realignment” totaling $105 million.

That is to cover severance for laid-off employees and the costs to execute Duke’s plan to move out of leased space in uptown and consolidate employees at the just-completed Duke Energy Plaza tower.
