LAKE WYLIE, S.C. — Drought conditions are becoming more severe across the Charlotte area and Channel 9 has learned that two more boat ramps have been closed on Lake Wylie.
Officials said the low water levels are dangerous for boaters. The last two ramps on the Allison Creek section of Lake Wylie closed Monday night because of those safety concerns.
The lake levels of been dropping for weeks because of the drought, which is considered severe in the area. All four ramps in the Allison Creek section of the lake are closed.
Channel 9 also learned the ramps that Mecklenburg County runs have been shut down as well. Officials consulted with Duke Energy about those closures and decided to go ahead and do it.
“In order to ensure the safety and most importantly protect people's property, we want to make sure there's enough clearance on their boats going in and out of the water,” said Jennifer Jabon with Duke. “So it's safety and protect property.”
The drought is also having an effect on the hydroelectric plant on Lake Wylie, which has scaled back production to keep those water levels stable.
Officials said they will keep monitoring the lake and providing updates as necessary, which could mean even more ramp closures.
