CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The community will gather together Saturday to celebrate the life of a young Charlotte basketball player hit and killed by a car last August.
"He could've been anything," the young man's mother Natasha Larmond said.

Larmond's son, 18-year-old Mikey Maddox, was a basketball star and was hit and killed while riding his bike on Old Concord Road last August. Maddox played on the Team United travel basketball team at Harding High School.
His family, former teammates, and classmates will meet Saturday at noon to honor his memory.
Police said the UNC Charlotte student who hit him, Dylan Leviner, was driving with a revoked license and going 73 mph where the speed limit is 45 mph.

In April, prosecutors agreed to a plea deal and Leviner pleaded guilty to misdemeanor death by vehicle. He will spend two years on probation, but no time in prison as part of the deal.
"He would like the family to know that he is so, so sorry for their loss," defense attorney Anthony Monaghan said.
Larmond said no apology could bring Mikey back, but through everything, she said she could find a way to feel for Leviner.
"I just feel like he's going to suffer just as much as me," Larmond said. "Especially knowing all the love that Mikey had in the community. He's going to feel it forever."
