YORK COUNTY, S.C. — An 80-year-old Charlotte woman was killed after a tree fell on her car last Thursday afternoon as severe weather swept through the Carolinas, officials said.
A strong weather system brought torrential rain, tornadoes and windy conditions to the area.

The crash happened shortly after noon on Pleasant Road north of Fort Mill, troopers said. Gertrude Meyer was traveling north when a tree fell on her car and rolled off the back.
Meyer then lost control, sending the car into a ditch.
She was rushed to Atrium Health-CMC where she later died from her injuries.
There were no other vehicles or passengers involved.
Car hydroplanes into creek, killing driver in Gaston County
A driver was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon in Gaston County after his car hydroplaned into a creek, troopers said.
Terry Fisher, 73, of Cherryville, was driving east on Highway 150 about 2 miles west of town.
After the car hydroplaned, it went off the road, hit a pole and overturned in the creek, troopers said.
