Driver charged in hit-and-run crash that killed woman crossing street

CHARLOTTE — A driver has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman early Saturday in west Charlotte.

The crash happened just after 12:45 a.m. on West Boulevard near Remount Road.

When police got to the scene, they said 30-year-old Bianca Broom was found lying in the road and was pronounced dead by Medic.

According to police, Broom was was crossing the westbound lanes of West Boulevard, walking north to south, when she was hit by a gray 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Michael Zeb Green Jr.

Police said Green was speeding and continued to drive westbound until the Chevrolet broke down nearby.

When officers found Green a short time later, they said he admitted his involvement in the crash and was under the influence of alcohol.

Family members told Channel 9 she was heading to a cookout when she was hit. They described her as someone who was always making people laugh.

Loved ones placed flowers, cards and candles on a lamppost near the scene as a tribute to how many lives she touched.

“She was kind,” Broom’s cousin Sylvia Phillips said. “She was giving. She had a good heart and everybody she met loved her and she loved God.”

In addition to impairment, excessive speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash. Witnesses at the scene told police that the Chevrolet was traveling at an excessive speed.

Green has been arrested and charged with felony death by vehicle, felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired and open container.
