CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The driver who police said struck and killed a beloved high school basketball player while he rode his bike in the University City area earlier this month has been arrested and charged in his death.

On Wednesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police announced that Dylan Leviner turned himself in and was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of 18-year-old Miquase "Mikey" Maddox.

Police said Leviner was speeding around 1 a.m. on Aug. 11 in his 2003 Infiniti G35 when he collided with the bike that Maddox was riding near the Village at College Downs apartment complex on Old Concord Road near Suther Road.

Maddox was pronounced dead at the scene.

Leviner stopped immediately after the collision and remained on the scene. Police said he was not impaired and detectives had been investigating if speed played a factor before announcing the charge.

Maddox is the second basketball player from Team United, an Amateur Athletic Union traveling team out of Charlotte, to die in less than three months.

James Hampton collapsed on the court and died at the hospital when the team was in Virginia for a tournament in May.

Maddox’s AAU coach, Ed Cooke, told Channel 9 that Maddox was an amazing kid.

“Mikey was one of the best kids, I think, in the city,” Cooke said. “Confident kid, very confident kid. It wasn't nothing Mikey felt like he couldn't do.”

Cooke didn’t deny how challenging it’s been for him to cope with two deaths on his basketball team.

“We've just been getting through it, but it's been hard,” Cooke said.

Dozens of people came together last Friday to remember Maddox and share memories of the 18-year-old. His funeral was two days later.
