BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A driver is accused of leading deputies on a high-speed chase in Burke County Wednesday afternoon.
It started while deputies received a call about someone breaking into a home several miles away.
Deputies said the driver was wanted on probation charges and they believe that’s why he ran from deputies.
The chase ended along Andria Lane, behind a home in the area. Deputies said the suspect, Eric Taylor, left his girlfriend’s car before running into the woods.
Authorities said speeds reached nearly 90 mph during the chase along Highway 18, where Taylor passed several cars on a double yellow line.
Channel 9′s Dave Faherty spoke with Taylor and asked him why he didn’t stop. He said he was trying to get home.

Deputies said they found a small amount of meth inside the car, and family members said he’s wanted on charges in another county and that’s what led to the pursuit.
“If I’d been with him, I’d have him stop,” brother-in-law Robert Abernathy said. “Just think about what he’s doing and the lives he’s endangering. But he wasn’t thinking. He didn’t mean to hurt nobody or cause all this. He was just scared.”
Deputies told Channel 9 they don’t believe Taylor was involved in the break-in. His car did match the description of the one seen leaving the home and one of the deputies did get behind him and that’s when Taylor took off.
