CHARLOTTE — Central Freight Lines will shutter its Charlotte facility by the end of this year as the Texas-based trucking company moves to wind down its operations.

Layoffs for the 70 employees who work at Central Freight’s terminal at 7500 Statesville Road in north Charlotte began on Dec. 13 and are expected to be complete by Dec. 31, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification sent to the N.C. Department of Commerce.

In the WARN letter, the shutdown is attributed to “unprecedented financial distress, including loss of significant revenue, decreasing margins, increased overhead, severe operational inefficiencies, workforce attrition and various other unexpected and unforeseen circumstances.” That includes the company’s “inability to secure sufficient financing to maintain operations.”
