Doug Mayes, former WSOC-TV anchor, dies at 93

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former WSOC-TV anchor Doug Mayes died Sunday morning at 93, his family said.

Mayes was Charlotte's first permanent TV anchor in 1952 at WBTV.

He came to Channel 9 in January of 1982 and stayed until he retired in 1988.

Mayes was inducted into the inaugural class of the Charlotte Broadcast Hall of Fame in August.

No funeral arrangements have been made so far.

Channel 9 reporters will speak with longtime WSOC-TV anchor and managing editor Bill Walker Sunday afternoon about his memories of Mayes and his impact on the area.
