'Little Brown Dog' rescued from hurricane flooding has new job in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A dog that was rescued from in Edgecombe County flooding during Hurricane Matthew has a new home in Charlotte.

Members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care and Control emergency response team were deployed to the area to help with search and shelter operations.

Officers found a little brown dog, now named Charlotte, in Tarboro who quickly gained attention on social media. The dog even had her own hashtag: #LittleBrownDog.

Officers said they checked the dog for identification but couldn’t find any. They gave the dog food and water and moved on to check on other animals, but the dog followed the officers down the street.

The officers became attached to the little brown dog.”

An owner never came forward to reclaim the dog at the Edgecombe Animal Control Shelter, so officials decided that it was only fitting to send her back to the team who rescued her.

Officials announced Tuesday that Charlotte will serve on the ACC’s team as a member of the Human Education Program at ACC.

She will replace Ebony, a 14-year-old mixed breed, who was a longtime member of the program and has retired.
