Documents shed light on couple’s terrifying, deadly SC, Missouri crime spree

Chester County chase, shots fired Tyler Terry and Adrienne Simpson (WSOC)

New documents are helping paint a more detailed picture of Tyler Terry and Adrienne Simpson’s deadly crime spree that spanned from South Carolina to Missouri.

Terry was taken into custody on Monday in the woods of Chester County after a weeklong manhunt involving hundreds of law enforcement officers.

Simpson was arrested after leading deputies on a high-speed chase in Chester County with Terry as her passenger. During that chase, deputies said Terry fired shots at them, piercing the windshield of a patrol car.

Charging documents released on Monday shed light on the violent crime spree the pair are accused of.

Scroll below for a timeline of the crimes:

May 2: According to police documents, Simpson admitted she was with Terry in South Carolina on May 2 when he killed his ex-boyfriend, Thomas Hardin. Then, she said they picked up her ex-husband Eugene Simpson and killed him.

May 15: Around 10 p.m., a man in Missouri reported his yellow Corvette was shot at while driving on Highway 170 near St. Charles Rock Road in St. Louis. He said he was shot at about 10 times and there were three bullet holes in his vehicle, but he was not hurt.

Simpson later admitted to police that she drove up to a yellow Corvette and that Terry shot the vehicle from the passenger seat in hopes of robbing the driver.

May 15: Police said 45 minutes later, Stanley and Barbara Goodkin were driving a BMW along Delmar Boulevard in St. Louis when their car was hit with several gunshots. Barbara was fatally shot in the head. Stanley was shot in the chest, but his cell phone stopped the bullet.

According to police documents, Simpson told investigators she drove up to a BMW with the intent to rob the couple and that Terry shot several rounds into the vehicle.

May 15: Just before midnight, Sergei Zacharev was shot to death and robbed outside a Drury Inn on Eager Road in St. Louis while waiting for an Uber.

Police said ballistic evidence between the Delmar and Eager shootings matched. Video evidence also led police to a witness that had Simpson’s cell phone number. They were able to connect the number and name to previous homicides committed by Terry and Simpson in South Carolina.

Simpson later admitted to police the pair drove by a hotel and saw a man walking in a parking lot. She said Terry had a gun on his lap and told her to drive back around so they could rob him. According to police documents, Terry shot Zacharev several times from the car and Simpson grabbed his bag. Police said Terry then got out of the car and shot him several more times.

May 16: Channel 9 previously reported Terry and Simpson allegedly traveled to north St. Louis to purchase drugs before returning to South Carolina.

May 17: Chester County deputies said they tried to stop Terry and Simpson’s vehicle -- the same one connected to the St. Louis murders. The suspects reportedly led them on a high-speed chase while firing shots at deputies. The chase ended in a crash and Simpson was arrested, but Terry ran into nearby woods. He was on the run for seven days, despite several sightings.

May 19: The body of Simpson’s husband -- Eugene -- is found in Great Falls, South Carolina. He had been missing since May 2.

May 21: Investigators charge Terry and Simpson for Eugene’s murder.

May 24: After a weeklong manhunt involving hundreds of law enforcement officers, Terry was taken into custody in Chester County. Officials said the search ended without another shot fired and neither Terry nor the more than 300 officers looking for him were hurt during his arrest.

Terry faced a judge on Tuesday and bond was denied because a magistrate judge can’t set bond in a murder case in South Carolina.

Terry, 26, is charged with murder in a shooting in York in early May, the killing in Great Falls of Simpson’s estranged husband and the deaths of Zacharev and Goodkin on May 15 in St. Louis, authorities said.

On Monday, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell charged Terry and Simpson with two counts of first-degree murder and 12 other counts in the deaths of Goodkin and Zacharev.

In addition, Terry and Simpson are facing charges in the previously unreported shooting involving the yellow Corvette in the St. Louis area.

On May 26, York police upgraded the charge against Simpson from an accessory charge to a murder charge in the death of Thomas Hardin.

Investigators are still trying to determine why the suspects were in the St. Louis area, Bell said.
