CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Discovery Place is ready to help families with school-aged children gear up for this unprecedented school year.

The science museum is offering a new full-day program designed to help children in grades K-5 get through the virtual school day.

Children can attend school virtually from Discovery Place Science in uptown at 301 North Tryon St. or Discovery Place Nature at 1658 Sterling Rd.

At school camp, students will participate in their classroom lessons and work on their daily assignments in quiet spaces, under the supervision of staff members.

The program aims to ensure kids remain focused and on task throughout the virtual school day as well as providing them with basic educational assistance when needed.

When live lessons are over, students will continue learning through a grade-appropriate enrichment program featuring engaging activities that align with Charlotte-Mecklenburg School curriculum.

“We are excited to serve as a resource for families in our community by providing a learning environment that sets kids up for success during this challenging time,” said Discovery Place Vice President of Learning Experiences Heather Norton in a news release.

“Additionally, knowing that school field trips will not be offered during this time, our School Camp provides access for museum exploration and experiential hands-on learning,” Norton said.

Several COVID-19 related procedures and protocols will be in place to address the health and safety of participating students.

School camp runs weekly from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 31. through Dec. 18.

The program costs $250 for members or $300 for nonmembers each week.
