Two small weekend earthquakes recorded across Charlotte region

NORTH CAROLINA — Some people across our region may have felt an earthquake Saturday night.

Officials said two small earthquakes were recorded in the Charlotte area, one near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the other in Union County.

The first one hit just before midnight and it was centered about 12 miles north of Lenoir.

Geologists said it was a 2.1 magnitude quake.

Then, a 1.8 magnitude earthquake hit Union County around 8:30 a.m., about 5 miles east of Indian Trail.

No damage was reported from either quake.
