HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — The initial rezoning request for Vermillion Village in Huntersville was approved in 2017, with hopes of landing a supermarket to anchor the project. Now, after years of trying to land an anchor and tweaking plans, it appears the mixed-use project is ready to move forward.

On Monday, the Huntersville Town Board approved a revised rezoning petition for Vermillion Village. The project is being developed by a team led by Bowman Development Group, Steve Vermillion of MPV Properties and Texas-based Embrey Partners.

The project now calls for 292 apartments, 49 townhomes and about 70,000 square feet of commercial space. It will be developed on a 30-acre site at 404 N. Church St., just north of downtown Huntersville.

The original rezoning request was approved with a plan of 400 residential units, including apartments and townhomes, and 165,000 square feet of commercial space. That commercial space would have been anchored by a 78,000-square-foot grocery store, site plans show.
