CHARLOTTE — Charlotte developer Grubb Properties has closed on its NoDa property, where it will begin a mixed-use development in early 2021.
The firm paid $17 million for 10.5 acres at the longtime Herrin Ice site, at 315 E. 36th St., according to Mecklenburg County real estate records. The property is adjacent to the Lynx Blue Line 36th Street Station.

Grubb will build two phases of apartments with its Link brand, with about 500 units total, and an office building measuring between 100,000 and 125,000 square feet, executives from the firm said last week. Demolition is expected to start in February, to give time for Herrin Ice to relocate, said Eric Applefield, director of development at Grubb Properties.
The Herrin family submitted a statement about its plans now that the real estate deal has closed.
It said the company will continue to serve customers in the current location as long as possible. The hope is to still relocate, with negotiations underway for a new site, but Herrin Ice said it is also exploring merger and acquisition options. Herrin did not say where it could relocate.
