BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Investigators say a Dyartsville man accused of shooting a man who broke into his home last Wednesday morning lied to police about what happened during the incident, according to Channel 9’s partner, the Morganton News Herald.
Deputies said they responded to a home on Gold Mine Road for a breaking and entering call.
Investigators said Kevin Lewis McSheffrey Jr. was found dead inside the house.
The homeowner, Steven Adam Taylor, of Morganton, was charged with murder.
Taylor told police that he shot McSheffrey as he was breaking into his home, but according to investigators, the evidence doesn’t add up. Authorities said on Wednesday that blood was found in the front yard, on the porch and in a bathtub.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News reporter Dave Faherty there have been problems at the home in the past, including sounds of gunfire.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigations are continuing to investigate.
Authorities haven’t confirmed what they believe led up to the shooting.
