ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A 60-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning in the shooting death of a woman in Rockwell, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they were called to a home in the 1900 block of Cannon Street around 7:40 p.m. Saturday night for reports of someone who had been shot.

Deputies and officers from the Rockwell Police Department said they were met by Melvin Douglas Morton, 60, of Salisbury, in the living room. After a further search of the home, officers said they found a woman’s body on the bedroom floor.
Kristy Rothwell Hiatt, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound.
Early Sunday morning, sheriff’s detectives said they charged Morton with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was being held in the Rowan County Detention Center without bond.
The Rowan County sheriff said the investigation was ongoing.
