UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A man accused of shooting his brother-in-law while the victim was asleep and then hiding the sawed-off shotgun in a creek bed will appear in court Tuesday.

Police said the victim, James Hunt, ran to a neighbor's house on Collins Road for help Monday.

He was taken to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Investigators said the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute.

Officers arrested 31-year-old Shannon Painter when they saw him driving away from the scene.

He's charged with attempted murder.
