KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Authorities have arrested a man they said is responsible for the shooting death of his foster brother in Kannapolis.
According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called just before 10 a.m. on Thursday to a home along Fowler Street to investigate a possible shooting.
When they arrived, deputies found the victim, a 17-year-old boy. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his name.
In a release, the sheriff’s office said the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Jahrell McKenzie Jr. was arrested in York County, South Carolina. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Detectives said McKenzie was outside the home on Fowler Street and was recklessly “playing” with a handgun when it fired, striking his foster brother in the upper back. After the shooting, police said McKenzie left the scene and was later found in South Carolina.
No other information has been released and the investigation is ongoing.
