CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies are investigating a double shooting that left a man dead in Caldwell County on Friday night.
Authorities responded to the scene in the parking lot of a Dollar General in Hudson near Highway 321 just after 8:30 p.m.
Deputies confirmed Terry Dale Hefner, 44, died at the scene and Jody Shane Maltba, 33, was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.
Police said several people were riding motorcycles along Highway 321 in Hudson when Hefner and Maltba began cutting each other off. The two men got into a fight and began shooting at each other several times in the parking lot, and that was where Hefner died.
Officers said Maltba left the parking lot on his bike but crashed about two miles away and was flown to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
More than half a dozen rounds were fired and as many as ten bikers were in the parking lot during the shooting, police said.
Family members have since left balloons and candles for Hefner as a memorial.

Michelle Holeman works at the business next to the Dollar General where the shooting happened. She showed Channel 9′s Dave Faherty where some of the rounds hit her building.
“It’s scary to think in our small town that all of this could happen,” Holeman said. “Just coming in and seeing the aftermath and what we saw — we’re all a little scared.”
Police have not said whether either man is linked to one of several motorcycle groups in the area.
Hefner’s daughter told Channel 9 her father was a good person.
“I want people to know that my daddy was a good man,” she said. “There was nothing that he wouldn’t have done for anybody.”
Hudson’s police chief said his department needs to conduct more interviews before making a decision about potential charges in the case.
