IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A mother was arrested and charged Thursday for the death of a 5-month-old girl in Iredell County, deputies said.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that deputies were called on Sunday afternoon to a home on Old Mountain Road, near Troutman.

The sheriff said the baby was found dead inside a car. After an autopsy, investigators learned the girl died from environmental hyperthermia.

According to deputies, the mother, Madison Moore, said the girl was left in a car for several hours, which matched up with the her cause of death.

Moore was charged with one count of felony involuntary manslaughter.

Neighbor Linda Mcginty told Channel 9 that she saw an ambulance, firefighters and deputies flood her street Sunday afternoon.

“I just hate there wasn’t something I could do,” she said.

Shortly after they arrived at her neighbor’s home, she said she saw a deputy string up yellow crime scene tape.

“It was scary and I knew something was bad when they pulled the yellow tape out,” she said.

Mcginty is a respiratory therapist and said the thought of something happening to the baby girl she’d seen coming and going is upsetting.

“It really really upset me,” she said. “I wanted to do something to help somebody and I was this close but I couldn’t do anything to help that child.”

Neighbors told Channel 9 that they saw deputies combing through the house well into the night and investigators told us that items were seized from inside the home.

“I hope they find out the truth of what happened to that baby,” Mcginty said.

No other details have been released at this point and this is an ongoing investigation.

Moore is being held at the Iredell County Detention Center with bail set at $75,000.
