Deputies investigate social media threat against Union Co. school

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a social media threat against Porter Ridge Middle School, according to Sheriff Eddie Cathey.

Cathey posted on Facebook Friday morning that deputies are aware of a social media threat concerning threatening language toward the school, and are working to identify the source.

Once the person responsible is identified, charges will be filed, the sheriff said.

Cathey went on to say that authorities have no reason to believe the social media post represented a credible threat but that his office “takes all of these matters seriously and will make every effort to ensure all school campuses remain safe.”
